How Much TRX Do I Need to Send USDT?
This is one of the most-asked questions from new Tron users. The answer depends on two things: whether the recipient has ever received USDT before, and whether you're using Energy delegation or letting TRX burn. Here are the exact numbers.
- Without Energy delegation: 13 TRX (existing wallet) or 27 TRX (new wallet) burned per transfer.
- With Energy delegation: 4 TRX (existing wallet) or 8 TRX (new wallet) — 70% off the cost.
- TronLink shows the exact energy required before you confirm — check it every time.
- Keep at least 15–20 TRX in your wallet as a buffer to avoid failed transactions.
The Short Answer
| Scenario | Energy needed | TRX burned (no delegation) | Cost with delegation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing wallet (has received USDT) | 65,000 | ~13 TRX | 4 TRX |
| New wallet (never received USDT) | 130,000 | ~27 TRX | 8 TRX |
Without Energy Delegation
If your wallet has no delegated Energy and you haven't staked TRX yourself, the Tron network covers the energy cost by burning TRX directly from your balance. For a standard USDT transfer to a wallet that already holds USDT, this burn is approximately 13–14 TRX. For a first transfer to a brand-new wallet, it's approximately 27–28 TRX.
The exact figure varies slightly based on the Tron network's current energy-to-TRX conversion rate, which can shift with network congestion. TronLink always shows the exact amount on the confirm screen before you approve.
With Energy Delegation
Energy delegation means you send a small amount of TRX to a delegation service, receive delegated Energy in your wallet within seconds, and your USDT transfer uses that Energy instead of burning TRX. The economics:
- Standard transfer: Send 4 TRX → receive 65,000 Energy → transfer costs 0 TRX in gas → total cost: 4 TRX
- New wallet transfer: Send 8 TRX → receive 130,000 Energy → transfer costs 0 TRX in gas → total cost: 8 TRX
In both cases you pay exactly half what you'd burn without delegation. The Energy window lasts 20 minutes — send your USDT immediately after it arrives.
How to Know Which Amount Applies Before You Send
The cleanest way: open TronLink, tap Send, enter the recipient address, and look at the Energy Required line on the confirm screen before approving. If it shows ~65,000, you need 4 TRX. If it shows ~130,000, you need 8 TRX.
You can also check beforehand using our address checker — paste the recipient address and it queries the Tron blockchain to tell you whether their USDT storage slot exists.
If you're sending to a centralised exchange withdrawal address (Binance, OKX, Bybit etc.) — those are always existing wallets, always 65,000 energy.
If you're sending to someone's personal wallet for the first time — check first, it might be new.
Minimum TRX to Keep in Your Wallet
Even if you use Energy delegation for every transfer, you still need TRX to buy that Energy. Recommendation:
- Casual user (1–5 transfers/month): Keep 20 TRX. Enough for 2–3 delegation orders plus a buffer.
- Regular user (daily transfers): Keep 50 TRX. Top up weekly.
- P2P / high volume: Keep 100+ TRX. Order Energy in batches when you know you'll need it.
KNOW YOUR AMOUNT. GET ENERGY. SEND.
