Why this question keeps coming up
Two friends. One stakes 8,000 TRX, brags about "free transfers." The other pays 4 TRX to TronNRG every time they send USDT. Both are doing the rational thing — for their volume. Confusing the two costs people money.
This calculator finds the exact volume at which staking starts to pay off. Below that line, delegation wins. Above it, staking does. The math is simpler than most threads make it out to be.
What staking actually does
When you freeze TRX (technical name: stake v2), the network gives you Energy every 24 hours based on the network-wide rate. That Energy refills daily without further action. Send a USDT transfer, it consumes ~65,000 Energy from your balance. Sleep, wake up, your Energy is back.
Sounds free, but it isn't. The TRX you froze is locked. After you unstake, there's a 14-day cooldown before withdrawal. If TRX rallies 30% during that window — happens regularly — you can't sell. If it dumps, you're stuck. That opportunity cost is real even though it doesn't show up on any receipt.
The break-even threshold
For typical users, the line is around 30 USDT transfers per day. Below that, the cost of locking enough TRX to cover your daily Energy exceeds what you'd pay in delegation fees over the same period. Above that, the locked-TRX cost amortizes across enough transfers to win.
The exact number depends on TRX price, how long you plan to keep the stake, and whether your transfers are predictable. Use the calculator with your actual numbers — the default values are reasonable starting points but your case might shift the line.
The lazy answer (for most people)
If your USDT activity is irregular — some weeks you send 10 transfers, some weeks zero — delegation almost always wins. Staking only pays off on consistent high volume. P2P traders, OTC desks, and high-frequency remittance senders are the natural fits. Everyone else should pay 4 TRX per transfer and keep their TRX liquid.
One trap: people stake in anticipation of "future high volume" that never materializes. The 14-day unwind makes this expensive. If your daily volume isn't above 30 transfers today, delegation is the safer bet until it is.
